I have joined the bandwagon, and bought an iPad to be used in my classroom. I have never regretted my decision.

My students love practicing their Math facts using the Math Bingo game. They choose an avatar, difficulty level, and answer addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division Math facts. The object of Math Bingo is to get a pattern of five Bingo Bugs in a row by correctly answering math problems. The app gets track of high scores, so the students can engage in friendly competition with each other if they choose to do so. They love getting the Bingo bugs that spin all around as an instant positive reinforcement, and they can get more bugs by playing the Bingo bug bungee.

Another favorite is the ABC Tracer. It animates and shows how to write alphabets, numbers, and words with strokes in the right order on the traditional red-blue guiding lines. It provides fun feedback of right and wrong strokes.

A student who needs to work on keyboarding, but does not like using the Mavis Beacon program willingly practices typing using the Action Typing app. The goal  is to type out the words as fast as you can before the enemy attacks. This app is more fun than educational, and I just use it as a reinforcement for using Mavis Beacon.

Students who need to work on literacy enjoy Sound Sorting Beginning Sounds and Simplex Spelling Phonics1.  The instant feedback increases their motivation to do better.  I will try the Simplex Spelling HD next for spelling sight words.

The apps are not just for practicing skills, but they are also used to understand vocabulary in a particular Unit of Inquiry.  This student, for instance, uses iPlanets to learn about the Solar System.

The use of iMac has also enhanced learning in my classroom. This student enjoys using Starfall on the “big” screen.

Using technology has definitely improved learning in my classroom.  This student uses Jungle Memory to improve his recall of math facts with encouraging results.  I am looking forward to discovering more apps, and I will post more reviews in the future.
